Adopting the well known adage « A fault admitted is half forgiven», Nobel
Biocare ‘s press release took yet another astounding step in recognizing the poor reliability of some of its products.
Actually , the press releases which come after the big manufacturing conventions in Las Vegas and advertise the marketing of new products (560 in 2005, 300 in 2007) have , as a final comment, under the title, « Denial of responsibility », the following comment: “This release may contain advance statements such as the future performance of materials and products ,financial situations etc. which present risks and uncertainties. These statements are subject to unknown risks and other factors which could lead to substantial differences between actual performance or results and similar statements”
Nobel Biocare therefore implicitly recognizes that its advertisements are only…
advertisements. This comment has aroused some commotion among professionals in dental implantology to the point that in his editorial of August 2005 in the journal « Implant », Xavier Assémat-Tessandier, Editor in chief , could only state that we have gone from “scientific development to judicial umbrella .” and he concluded with this bitter statement , “ I thought that my duty as Editor in chief was to warn you of the real difficulty that we encounter today in bringing you reliable and tested information about new products arriving on the market.”
